The Air Force makes it easy for you to take time off from your full-time employment and gain skills you won't get anywhere else.

What about your civilian job?

Most employers, particularly Government, will support you when you join the Air Force Reserve. In fact you'll likely gain skills from your time in the Reserve that will add to your civilian job. With the Employer Support Payment (ESP) Scheme, your employer may also be eligible to receive a subsidy from the Air Force to compensate for your absence. Government employers in particular are very understanding when it comes to the Air Force Reserve.

The Employer Support Payment Scheme

The Employer Support Payment (ESP) Scheme provides financial assistance, after a qualifying period, to eligible employers and self-employed Reservists. Administered by the Directorate of Reserve and Employer Support Division, it's designed to help offset the costs of releasing employees or members attending in person for duty for most categories of Australian Defence Force (ADF) service.

Payments are received weekly regardless of the employee's salary, and there are no restrictions on how employers can use the money. Higher level payments may be authorised in the case of substantial financial hardship or loss of capability.

The Defence Reserves Support Council has been specifically set up to help you answer any questions your employer may have. You, or your employer, are welcome to contact a local Squadron for more specific information at any time or by visiting www.defencereservessupport.gov.au
