The General Service Officer (GSO) First
Appointment Course at RMC

Here you will be introduced to the world of military command and leadership, and learn infantry minor tactics, navigation, weapons training and other military subjects. General Service Officer training is the perfect option for anyone up to the challenge of assuming a leadership role on the world stage.

The Specialist Service Officer (SSO) First
Appointment Course at RMC

This course is for selected candidates with existing professional qualifications such as engineers, doctors, nurses, and so on. These officers will serve in a specialist capacity in the Australian Army and will therefore not require extensive training in military skills. They will, however, require the same knowledge of command and leadership and this will be gained during two modules of study (Foundation Skills and Officer Skills), each of 16 days duration conducted at RMC.

Army Reserve (ARES) Officer Training

Both the GSO and the SSO courses can be undertaken on a part-time basis (Army Reserve - ARES). The topics studied by regular and reserve officers (GSO and SSO) are the same, except in the case of reserve officers (who undertake the Ares GSO FAC – Army Reserve General Service Officer First Appointment Course) there is a need for more flexible study and learning arrangements in order to achieve the same level of competence as a regular First Appointment officer.

The Army Reserve GSO First Appointment Course

The Army Reserve General Service Officer First Appointment Course has flexible study and learning arrangements available in order to achieve the same level of competencies as a regular First Appointment Officer. It is a 5 module course, totalling 104 days residential training. Candidates are expected to complete the Ares GSO FAC within a maximum of 3 years.

Army Style activities such as obstacle courses, circuit training, strength and endurance training, to build your confidence and fitness levels along the way.

Key training elements

The 18 month GSO course is divided into three classes, each conducted over one six month semester. Each class introduces the cadet to further levels of leadership skill and complexity. Beginning with the basics of soldiering, cadets move through to second class and eventually first class where complex warfare and commanding a platoon are covered.

They learn everything from weapons skills, how to live in the field, first aid and radio communications before heading back to the college to continue their studies.
