Enlistment / Appointment

The Letter of Offer

If you successfully complete each stage of the application process, you will receive a Letter of Offer, your official ADF job offer. You will also be sent joining instructions for the Service you have been accepted into, which will provide you with a good indication of what to expect while undertaking your training. This is a fantastic accomplishment and means that we have seen you display some very special qualities over the course of the tests and interviews

Take the time to read your Letter of Offer properly, paying close attention to the Conditions of Service and most importantly, sign this section and return it.

On the day

On the day of your enlistment or appointment you will complete an Attestation Medical / final medical check to ensure there have been no changes since your last medical examination. You will also complete any final administrative procedures.

The ceremony

The Enlistment or Appointment ceremony is a very proud moment, when you become an official member of the Australian Defence Force. We encourage you to invite friends and family along to watch you undertake the official oath or affirmation, to find out more about what lies ahead for you and to say a proper goodbye.

At the conclusion of the ceremony you will head straight to initial military training and commence life as a member of the Australian Defence Force.

Notify DFR of any changes to health or medical

If you have suffered any illness or injury since your initial medical examination, or there have been any additions or changes to prescribed medication, you are requested to contact the Medical Supervisor immediately. Failure to do so could result in a delay to your enlistment.

Preparing for Enlistment / Appointment Day

Your Enlistment Coordinator will organise your Enlistment/Appointment day, which all successful applicants must attend. This will be held at your local Defence Force Recruiting Centre.
Before you can attend your Enlistment or Appointment Day you must ensure that:

  • Results from any requested blood tests have been received by DFR.
  • If relevant to your position and included with your Letter of Offer, the Security Pack must be completed and returned.

Notify DFR of any criminal pending matters

You are required to inform us immediately should you be involved with an incident with the police, between the issue of the Letter of Offer and your day of enlistment/appointment. If you have any outstanding court action, a conviction or penalty imposed, your offer of enlistment/appointment will be reviewed, and if warranted, the offer may be adversely affected.

A second Criminal History Check will be performed before the day of your enlistment or appointment.
