Applied for entry as an Officer through Defence University Sponsorship, ADFA or RMC, or for an ADFA Education Award. And have successfully completed the YOU Session and Assessment Session.
An ADF Officer is a leader. They are required to influence others to achieve planned objectives professionally, and where necessary, with courage and dedication.
Leadership is the major ingredient which binds a team together through loyalty, honesty, and good communication - allowing the effective management of all team members to achieve the desired objective.
We need to be satisfied that you have leadership potential, that you have the capability to learn all that is required to become an officer in the ADF and we make this determination through the Officer Selection Board.
Similar to preparing for the Defence Interview, learn as much as you can about the ADF.
Read up on your particular job and Service, paying close attention to things like training, the role of an officer and what qualities we look for in a leader and a manager. Know your specific job duties.
If you can show us that you have researched your subject thoroughly, we will be impressed.

What to expect on the dayEach Officer Selection Board is slightly different depending on the Service. You could be required to participate in a combination of a written exercise, oral presentation, a group exercise, a practical exercise and an interview with a panel. For Army applicants, you will be required to participate in the Fitness Test at the Officer Selection Board. |
If you’re applying for ADFA or RMC, the Officer Selection Board takes place in Canberra over a few days. As well as assessing your officer qualities, the ADFA Board gives you the chance to take a tour of the campus and spend time with potential classmates.

We also recommend that you attend any public Defence activities happening in your area, like Ship Visits, Air Shows and Base Open Days. And if possible, get in contact with a current member of the ADF, working in the same Service and position that you are applying for.
If you are successful at the Officer Selection Board you will receive a recommendation and be placed on a national order of merit. This means that your results will be assessed against all the other Officer Selection Board candidates across Australia once all the Officer Selection Boards have been completed for that particular intake. You will be advised as to your success later on in the year.
If you are unsuccessful at the Officer Selection Board you will receive detailed feedback from the Officer Selection Board panel, as to what measures you could take to create a successful outcome at a later date.
You will also have the opportunity to discuss your options with a DFR representative. If you are willing to act on the feedback and advice given and you are still genuinely motivated to become an officer in the ADF, then we would encourage you to sit another Officer Selection Board at an appropriate time.
